Goods & Service Tax (GST) has been introduced in year 2017. In This system every taxpayer get a unique number called Goods & Service Tax Identification Number (GSTIN). We have decoded this GSTIN for you. GST system is under Central Bord of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBITC). GSTIN number comprises 15 alpha numeric digits grouped in 5 parts. This 5 parts have their own significance. The detailed analysis given below:

  • Group 1

This contains 2 numeric digits signifies the state in which GST taxpayer is registered. Every state has its own code.

  • Group 2

This contains 10 alpha numeric digit same as the PAN number of registered entity for domestic entities. While International  entities has the 2 digit year, 3 digit country code & 5 digit serial number.

  • Group 3

This contains single digit signifying the number of  this entity registered under same PAN.

  • Group 4

This contains single digit alpha numeric code signifies meaning as below:

Z , 1 to 9, A, B, E to J – Default Normal, Composition or Casual Domestic entity

S – Input Service Distributor

C – Tax Collector

D – Tax Deductor

F- Foreign Non Resident

N – UN Bodies, Embassies & Other

R – Tax Return Perpetrator

M – Temporary ID

  • Group 5

This contains single checksum digit of all 14 preceding digits.
