Permanent Account Number (PAN) is the important documents in the life of Indian people. It is the 10 digit alpha-numeric code allotted to applicants of PAN card. But, did you know the significance of that 10 digit alpha-numeric code. We have decoded this PAN number for you. These 10 digits are divided in five groups. Each one group with their significance is given below.

  • Group 1

It consist of three digit alphabets series from AAA to ZZZ. It is allotted on random basis.

  • Group 2

It is single digit alphabet which indicates the status of PAN card holder which are as follows:

C – Company

P – Person/Proprietor

H – Hindu Undivided Family

F – Firm

A – Association of Person

T – Trust

B – Body of Individuals

L – Local Authority

J – Artificial Judicial Person

G – Government

  • Group 3

It is the single digit alphabet which indicates the first letter of Surname of the holder or name of entity.

  • Group 4

It consist of four digit numeric code from 0001 to 9999. It is again allotted on random basis.

  • Group 5

It is single digit alphabet, allotted as checksum digit of all preceding 9 digit alpha-numeric PAN number.

These all 10 digit forms a PAN number as a whole. It is allotted by Income Tax Department of India and accounted for tax purpose for resident Indians. It is also used as the Proof of Identity (POI) and Date of Birth (DOB) proof for many purposes. Now, citizens can signifies PAN numbers by their own and minimize risk of frauds. Resident Indians can login with their PAN number on Income Tax department website for tax compliance.
